09-Sept: Mozambique - Tofo (Casa Michelle)

Complete chill-out day today!

Woke up at 5:30 again, yet another sunrise - was a bit blustery on the deck so I stayed indoors and sat watching it from the couch instead. Getting lazy now! Once the show was over I headed back to my very comfy bed to catch a few more Z's.

Had a leisurely breakfast, grabbed my Kindle and alternated between sun-bathing and sun-hiding under the marquee for most of the morning. At 12:00 decided on an early lunch with Jim, Sue, Karen and Steve. (By the way, Sue saw the sunrise this morning - finally!). We strolled along the beach chatting away, doing our best to avoid eye contact with the hawkers on the beach who were desperate to sell jewellery, bags and other items that I did not need nor want.

Jim and Steve were walking ahead and unbeknownst to us they were telling any hawkers that approached them that they would not buy anything but to try their partners behind. This guaranteed that they were left in peace sharpish as the guys would nearly coming running to us thinking they might make a sale. Cheeky sods!

Pete, Kirsten, Geoff and Lu joined us for lunch. Pete's dive was a bit of a disaster when his equipment failed, so he had to abort. Gutted! Francois was going to buddy up with Tony, very handy that he passed his Nitrox test!

More sun-bathing was called for in the afternoon. This time I headed down to the beach, taking shade in the thatched parasols at the base of the property. Jim and Sue went swimming in the sea again - this time Jim got stung by a jellyfish. That's two stings out of three outings - so I'm definitely sticking to the pool. Besides, the swell is quite rough, I don't think I'd manage to get safely out past the breakers.

The divers came back on a high that evening, another great dive chalked up. We all headed off to Dino's for "decompression drinks". Signs at the bar suggested that tonight they were holding a Full Moon Party - hmmm, that could prove interesting. While happily sipping on my firm favourite Savannah Dry, Pete grabbed all our attention, "look out to sea, do you see that?". A tiny orange glow had appeared on the horizon, the moon was rising up from the ocean, It was huge and blood orange in colour and like no moon I had ever seen before. Wow!! Absolutely beautiful.

We all stopped and stared in wonder and awe, apart from Francois and Steve who pegged it back to the house to try and get photos of it on their fab cameras. I kinda felt a bit sorry for them as they were so intent on trying to get a great picture that they just couldn't stop, look and just appreciate the fact that this is a sight they are not really going to see again in a long, long time I'm guessing. So many conditions are necessary to see this, you need a full moon, to be by an ocean at the correct orientation, and you need a clear sky. And because it rose so quickly, they missed the best bit for sure. Still each to their own.

Taking a sneaky peek to my left I smiled as I saw Pete and Kirsten snuggling together in a sweet embrace as they watched this incredible sight together.  The moon rose rapidly over the space of five minutes, and about ten minutes later, it had returned to its normal colour and usual height in the sky - as though nothing out of the ordinary had ever happened.

We left Dino's, piled into the minivan and drove around Tofo looking for somewhere to eat for the night. Sadly the restaurant we had planned on eating at was closed. Only a few other places were open and none of them looked like they could cater for our large group. Plan B is is then, back to the house we went and Pete whipped up two delicious pasta dishes for us.

After dinner, myself, Pete and Francois headed back to Dino's to check out the Full Moon Party. We were under no illusions as the town was deserted with it being out of season. Sure enough we arrived to find a handful of people at the bar. As the night wore on, more groups arrived - all mainly divers and instructors. Still, if I said there was thirty people there I'd be being generous. We were delighted when Jim joined us a little later on, his curiosity was also piqued and had to be sated.
